The Ulster Museum and Studio ON are working together to offer a 3-day iPad workshop for primary school aged children between 8-11 years old.

Using the museum as a backdrop you will create your very own movies, games and animations bringing the exhibits to life.
On the Thursday afternoon your friends and family are invited to attend a showcase of all your work.

MIA TEACHER TRAINING WEEK 2013

Dear Teacher,

Welcome to our annual MIA teacher training week. Due to renovations at Ulidia we are moving back to the Studio ON building at Crossnacreevy. To make up for it, we are offering some more localised workshops in our sister Creative Learning Centre, the Nerve Centre, Derry.

This year we will feature an ‘Ask the Expert’ course in Final Cut, where you will learn effective strategies and tips and tricks first-hand from our film trainers. We’ve also introduced a new strand of training with an all you need to know course ‘A-Level Journalism Support & Training Event‘,  in addition to ‘Sound & Post-Production‘ for the sound savvy teachers.
 We have further developed our ‘Movies Go Mobile’ course to include special effects and green-screen techniques to make your films match your creative vision with ease.

All Courses will be held in Studio ON, (Crossnacreevy) , or the Nerve centre (Derry).

This course is a round up of all the best low budget effects we know of. Covering a range of camera, lighting and post-production tricks this session will be a practical hands on workshop, which will help your students, improve the look and content of their films. This course will introduce both new and existing teachers to genre, film language and everything else you need to know at GCSE level. The session will also demonstrate a range of different illustrative examples that can be used in the classroom and will provide some ideas for practical follow-on exercises, as well as help and advice in planning your scheme of work.

For the first time this year, we will be including a Journalism strand as part of our programme.
We will be delivering this training event in partnership with CCEA.  It will offer guidance for teachers commencing the new A-Level in Journalism in the Media and Communications Industry and will provide hands-on training in podcasting to align with the more advanced technical requirements of the A-level coursework units – particularly at A2.

Setting up for good sound recording is the easiest thing to forget and the hardest thing to fix in post-production.  This course will help you record better quality sound. Participants will use built-in mic’s, external mic’s boom poles and low budget tricks to improve sound. The afternoon will focus on post-production techniques, editing sound, creating and adding sounds effects to enhance your movie.

Using iPads’ you will shoot and export a short film looking at tricks and tips to make the most of pocket sized technology. What is Aim High?

Aim High is an 18 month long intensive and highly practical training and development programme funded and run by media industry partners across Northern Ireland, BBCNI, Northern Ireland Screen, Creative Skillset and NI’s top independent production companies.  This is the 2nd Aim High training programme for the Media Industry in Northern Ireland and its aim is to continue to develop a talent pool to nurture and hothouse emerging talent. The programme will offer the best route into the creative industries across Northern Ireland. We are looking for 10 trainees interested in developing programme-making skills.

Over 18 months we’ll train and develop you, starting with a two week Digital Bootcamp at the BBC in Northern Ireland, then you’ll be sent on successive work placements on productions across Northern Ireland and potentially the UK.
The Digital Bootcamp will consist of a blend of craft training, masterclasses, creative skills and multiplatform thinking, along with a generous helping of people skills and career-enhancing tips.

You’ll be mentored by a senior person from within the industry, and by the end of the programme, you’ll have the skills to turn creative ideas into fantastic content.

Who can apply?

You are inspired by brilliant programmes and have the creativity, drive and dedication to succeed. You are flexible, keen to take on new challenges and enjoy being part of different teams. You have talent, potential and passion.

We are eager to welcome different academic backgrounds and experiences into the programme. You will have in common a drive to be creative and a natural passion for producing great content.

You’ll need to be able to write quickly and accurately, and know what makes a good story.

Must haves: you must be able to work flexibly. If successful you will have placements throughout Northern Ireland and possibly the UK, and often be required to work flexible hours.

The programme is not open to anyone who has already had 12 months or more of continuous paid production experience.

Post-Primary Partnership Programme

This is a rolling 3-year support programme that aims to embed the creative use of ICT across the curriculum. Studio ON works strategically with management in each school to identify, plan and deliver a training and support programme, as well as on-going technical support and advice. Studio ON is looking for 2 new schools to join our Post-Primary Partnership Programme in 2013 – 2014.

Moving Image Arts Support Programme

This is a 1 year support programme that aims to help schools who plan to offer Moving Image Arts GCE and/or GCSE, but who realise their staff need further training and support. Participating schools will receive tailored film-related training for teachers and pupils. Places will be limited to 3 schools each year.

Primary Partnership Programme

Studio ON would like to offer 3 primary schools the opportunity to benefit from our Partnership Programme, a themed programme of teacher training and in-class support. The aim of this opportunity is to assist schools and staff to gain the skills necessary to integrate new media technologies and ICT into teaching and learning and to meet the needs of CCEA’s ICT Accreditation Scheme.

Each workshop is a stand alone day so you don’t need to attend all 3 days. To apply please complete an application form  for each day you wish to attend. You will also need to download, complete and bring with you on the day  the parent/guardian permission slip if you are under 18.

OCT 31 – exploring animation with iStopmotion & Photoshop

Learn all the basics of animation from animating characters in iStopmotion to drawings and shapes in Photoshop. No previous knowledge required.

NOV 1 – edit basics using Final Cut

Final cut is an industry standard editing package. The course will cover set-up, basic edit techniques and an exploration of the advanced features of final cut. No previous experience needed.

NOV 2 – post-production with After Effects

After Effects is a very powerful post-production tool for film makers. Create and add effects, manipulate your basic footage to add extra depth and character. No previous experience needed but good computer skills required.

Completed entries are returned to the Council where we will evaluate them and choose the top 10 to attend a series of ‘Master Classes’ supported by external advisors who will help you develop your concepts into marketable products or services.
The competition concludes with the opportunity to present your product to a panel of expert judges, the winning concept will receive a £500 reward to refine and help commercialise their product.

The programme will give you the opportunity to:

• Try out innovative alternatives, predict potential outcomes and make reasoned decisions
• Research competing and conflicting markets
• Evaluate and refine your product
• Deal with the many pressures of a business environment including deadlines and conflict management
• Listen and respond to your target audience using various media streams
• Receive and deliver constructive support and feedback
