INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Course Dates: SEPT 28 & 30, OCT 5, 7

Learn how to use digital still images to create short movies, digital stories and comics. Source and upload images as well as adding text, narration and music. Digital stories and comics can be used for any curriculum subject.

STARTING PHOTOSHOP

Course Dates: OCT 12, 14

Time: 4-30-6.30pm

COURSE NOW FULL

An introduction to understanding digital images, the Photoshop interface and simple use of Photoshop software. This course would suit anyone with none or very limited experience in Photoshop.

INTERMEDIATE PHOTOSHOP

Course Dates: NOV 9, 11, 16, 18

Time: 4-30-6.30pm

Develop your skills in Photoshop using layers and the various selection tools, filters and masks. Some previous Photoshop experience is essential.

EXPLORING STOP-MOTION ANIMATION

Course Dates: NOV 23, 25, 30, DEC 2

Explore simple stop-motion animation techniques that can be used across the curriculum. We look look at animating with a digital camera and MovieMaker as well as using dedicated animation software.

EXCHANGE & EXHIBIT

APPLY FOR THIS COURSE

An introduction to Wordpress and how to use it for Exhibiting and Exchanging as part of the Key stage 3 ICT accreditation scheme. Participants will also be introduced to Interact NI, a free Wordpress blogging tool that allows pupils to upload work, leave comments and share ideas.

The project will provide young people with the opportunity of organising and promoting their own film festival. The main areas of training and preparation will be in programming, marketing, graphic and web design,  press liaison, audience targeting, scheduling, coordinating and attending events with QFT staff and industry professionals. The project will documented on film by the participants with a professional filmmaker. There will also be a workshop on Vjing and the work that is produced will be projected during the weekend.

The festival will give young people from various cultural backgrounds in Belfast a chance to work together and produce something that they can be proud of. The training and festival will be facilitated by QFT Learning, in association with the Coco-Cola Cinemagic  International Film and Television Festival, the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s, and Trans Belfast. These organisations will offer a wide range of skills, equipment, facilities and industry contacts. The participants will also be able to complete an accreditation through EDI in Creative & Cultural Practice Level 2 VRQ.  The project will begin on 2 September, culminating in the weekend festival events from 29-31 October, during the closing weekend of the Belfast Festival at Queen’s.

SUMMER SCHOOL July 5 – July 9Do you have an interest in interactive gaming?Would you like to learn how to create your own interactive games?Are you aged 15-18?This year Studio On is introducing its first interactive games development school. The week long course is aimed at 15 to 18 year olds who really enjoy gaming and would like to find out the basics of how to create their own interactive games. Students will learn how to use appropriate image editing, photo manipulation and video editing software to create media rich content.  The course will examine various  multimedia authoring and game software and demonstrate how these can be used to create interactive games for various platforms including cd-rom, web and mobile devices!

Expect to learn about a wide range of studio techniques including MIDI programming, how to sequence a track, how to use microphone techniques creatively, using Logic instruments for synthesis and sampling, DSP effects and mastering techniques, studio set-up, as well as audio editing and flexing/ warping. Create a track from scratch and learn how to make a club anthem. If you are between 15 and 18 and would like to take part in the course, fill in the application form below.

Our summer school this year will focus on using ICT creatively in the Primary Curriculum. Each course has been designed to support CCEA’s UICT Accreditation Scheme however applications are welcomed from any school regardless of scheme uptake or ICT experience.

Monday 16th August - Introducing Digital Storytelling
This beginner course will explore how to enhance learning by using Comic Life and Photo Story3 to create fun and engaging digital stories with still images. You will also learn basic digital stills camera skills.
UICT Desirable Features covered: Desk Top Publishing and basic Moving Image.

Tuesday 17th August – Moving Image in the Classroom
This course will take you through the process of planning, shooting and editing a short movie. It will cover basic moving image language as well as ways of managing film production in a busy classroom environment.

Wednesday 18th August – Introducing Stop-Motion Animation
As a hands-on introduction to stop-motion animation this course will give you the opportunity to explore a variety of simple animation techniques using digital stills cameras. It will also cover basic editing skills using Windows Movie Maker.

Thursday 19th August – Exploring Music & Sound
Designed for music specialists and non-specialists alike, this course will cover recording musical performances and creating soundscapes using Audacity as well as exploring music in the curriculum using technology.

Friday 20th August – Exchanging & Exhibiting
A key part of the UICT Accreditation Scheme is Exchanging and Exhibiting pupil work. This course will introduce you to Interact NI, a free blogging site managed by Studio On that allows pupils to upload work, make comments and share ideas. You will learn how to setup a new site, upload content & manage posts.

The above training will showcase sample CCEA approved ‘Using ICT’ Tasks for Key Stage 1 and 2 which utilise The Ulster Weans’ A-Z CD-Rom and The Ulster Weans’ A-Z of Creativity. Teachers attending the training will receive a free CD-Rom as well as relevant lesson plans and handouts. For more information about Nerve Centre educational resources please click here.

Criteria for application:  Good IT skills and some knowledge of Photoshop (including use of layers) and Flash (including masking) – Maximum number: 10

This course consists of exploring creativity through traditional mark-making, painting and digital photography, followed by image manipulation and preparation for animation in Photoshop and animating outcomes in Flash.

Day 1 – Exploring creativity through traditional mark-making & photography and planning personal projects

Day 2 – Producing images and digitizing

Day 3 – Photoshop tips, preparing and manipulating images

Day 4 – Preparation of images in Photoshop completed and Flash tips

Day 5 – Animating in Flash and exporting as short movies

Participants will have to attend all sessions and may need to do part of the work in their own time.

Welcome to the Creative Learning Center’s 2nd series of MIA teacher professional development training courses. After listening to your comments and feedback from last year we have retained and extended some of the best workshops, added a couple of new ones, and repainted and re-sprayed the rest. We have extended the training dates over a few weeks to give you a better opportunity to attend a range of courses. We also have squeezed a little less into each day and promise to have more pots of good coffee with time to chat, swap ideas and develop new contacts.

Having received funding from Northern Ireland Screen and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Cinemagic is able to offer you the support necessary to run a weekly or fortnightly After School Film Club. You will be able to choose and order films directly.

At the Film Club, students will view a film, which is followed by a short discussion. Cinemagic can help you with this discussion material.

The Film Club project will run from April 2010 – March 2011.

In order to set up a Film Club in your school a teacher must be prepared to organise and run the club. Initial training, ongoing support and advice will be provided throughout the project by Cinemagic.

Your school will also need to have a space where the film club can meet,which has a digital projector, DVD player, speakers and a screen or blank wall.
