Tullycarnet - Tulaigh Charnain : ( Hillock of the little cairn)

Tullycarnet is a younger estate than the Short Strand. It is a large unionist area in East Belfast which was built in 1970 to help accommodate the growing population in East Belfast. Between 1970 and 1973 shipyard workers from East Belfast moved in to the New Estate. During the troubles nine civilians were killed and by 1972 all Catholics living in the area had moved out.

Rumour has it that Tullycarnet Primary School was built on a graveyard and is now haunted by a ghost called "AMBROSE". Another piece of history in Tullycarnet is that we have a genuine Motte and Bailey Fort - years ago it was called the "Fairy Mound" but now everyone just calls it the "Moat".

The extension of the Belfast boundary in 1896 brought the old burial ground at Knock under the jurisdiction of Belfast Corporation. The name Knock comes from the Gaelic word Cnoc, which means ‘a hill' - this former country graveyard indeed stands on a hilltop overlooking Belfast. The guardians continued to control it until 1900 when the Corporation formally took it over. At that time all of the ground was allocated and only the re-opening of some graves was permitted. In 1905 a caretaker was employed to look after the property.

The graveyard contains a number of eighteenth century graves of local farming people from Knock and Tullycarnet, and its oldest legible gravestone is dated 1644.

Tullycarnet by Sammy:

Tullycarnet is an estate which is located just of the Kings Road on both sides. It is a small estate with nice homes. It is a nice estate with plenty of people and kids which attend the youth centre for many different activities. There are two public play parks located in Tullycarnet for kids to attend any time of the week. There is also a computer club located next to the local shops for youths to attend and explore the internet to keep them of the streets at night, if they don't have the opportunity in the own homes.

There is also a big activity centre named dundonald ice bowl!this is a big centre which people have the chance to play bowls, go for a skate or Indianaland, or birthday trips here.

The ice bowl is a very favourite place for people at the weekend as they can use there pocket money to enjoy themselves there, keeping them off the streets and not bored.

We take ages between 8 to 18 for different activities during the week, e.g. after school club for kids to go for help wit there homework n playtime away from home and there parents will know there safe there. After school club also lets parents finish work and collect there child to know they have been in a safe place.

Our youth club leaders are very helpful towards children about safety and staying safe.

The youth club also contains day trips, weekend trips for people who get involved in community work. So they can gave some people a chance to associate with other religion witch is an opportunity for young people to cum together and talk about how they are living.

Everyone is welcome!
