Background to the Girls Across Community Project

This challenging project, which began in November 2004, brought together 12 young women from Tullycarnet and Poleglass.

The young women were divided into two cross-community groups – a website group and a film group. The film group were given the opportunity to undergo professional documentary film training. By learning interview techniques and technical skills they documented the experiences of several women of different generations living in Poleglass and Tullycarnet. Meanwhile the website group were taught the design and technical and organisational skills needed to develop this live website.

Aims of the Project

  • To build relationships between young women in Poleglass and Tullycarnet
  • To explore women's cultural issues through the shared development of a website
  • To facilitate the telling of stories of women's lives in Poleglass and Tullycarnet through film documentation
“I have made lots of new friends during this project” Katrina, Poleglass

Community Relations

  • Community Relations Practice underpinned the entire Project.
  • Young women from across the community divide enjoyed Residentials, thought provoking exercises and collaborative creative activities leading to a greater mutual understanding and respect
  • Visits to the Chinese Welfare Association and Indian Community Centre helped the girls learn more about the different cultures in Belfast.
