History of Poleglass

Between 1969 and 1973 Belfast experienced the largest internal population movement of any European city since the last world war as a result of the Troubles of Northern Ireland. This resulted in over 10,000 houses being abandoned and 60,000 people retreating to the safety of Catholic and Protestant areas.

From the Irish, "The Green Hollow" , Poleglass was a town land until the Northern Ireland Housing Executive commenced building here in 1979. Key holders happily moved into the first estates, Old Colin and Colinmill in May 1980.

The population movement to Catholic West Belfast, a substantive redevelopment programme in the inner Belfast areas where fewer houses could be built to replace the unfit and demoished houses. Since then twelve other estates have been built, bringing the total number of homes to 2,600 with a population of 10,000.
